Now that we’ve established the importance of naming the intentions and values you’re showing up in your relationships with, we think about arevut, the value that drives people to support those in need. Where does that value come from? We hear three stories—first to Chicago, where Margarita speaks with Lee Litas, journalist and general manager of Forever Young, the senior daycare center that her mother, Chicago radio personality “Martochka” Litas, co-founded to help the same elderly population who enjoyed her shows and events. Then we head to Odesa where we hear from JDC’s Inna Vdovichenko about other ways JDC has evolved its response in caring for Jewish elderly—and finally to Brooklyn with Allen Meyerovich whose grandfather’s values are inspiring his dedicating time each week to help an elderly JDC client ward off the social effects of isolation during the pandemic through Entwine’s Insider Connections Virtual Service opportunity.

  • JDC ARchives x Entwine Film Screening: REFUSENIK

DATE: Monday, February 22 at 7:00 PM EST
Join the JDC Archives and JDC Entwine for the film screening of REFUSENIK.

REFUSENIK is the first retrospective documentary to chronicle the thirty-year movement to free Soviet Jews. It shows how a small grassroots effort bold enough to take on a Cold War superpower blossomed into an international human rights campaign that engaged the disempowered and world leaders alike. Told through the eyes of activists on both sides of the Iron Curtain – many of whom survived punishment in Soviet Gulag labor camps – the film is a tapestry of first-person accounts of heroism, sacrifice, and ultimately, liberation.

The screening will be followed by a Q&A with filmmaker Laura Bialis.

  • JDC Archives and JDC Ambassadors: Film screening of IRMI

DATE Wednesday, October 28th at 7PM EST
Join the JDC Archives and JDC Ambassadors for the film screening of IRMI, the recipient of the 2020 JDC Archives Documentary Film Grant. In 1906, Irmi Selver was born into an affluent Jewish family in Chemnitz, Germany, where she grew up, married and began her own family. Nothing prepared her for the upheavals and tragedy that were in store for her, or for the many times she would have to start her life over on unfamiliar ground. IRMI is a deeply personal film made by a daughter who is inspired by her mother’s story and her spirit. It explores the way in which unexpected events and chance encounters can both shape a life and reveal its true nature. Using Irmi’s own memoir—beautifully read by the actress, Hanna Schygulla and with a richly emotional score by composer, Todd Boekelheide, IRMI takes us on her unique journey. It is a portrait of a woman, whose strength, resilience and perhaps most stunningly, whose joie de vivre could not be snuffed out even in the face of unimaginable loss. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with filmmakers Veronica Selver and Susan Fanshel.

  • Interagency Efforts for Child Rescue and Immigration to the US

Date: Wednesday, May 13, 2020 at 2PM ET
The JDC Archives invites you to a webinar: “Interagency Efforts for Child Rescue and Immigration to the US: 1939-1942”. In this talk, Emily Bengels will explore child psychologist Ernst Papanek’s claim that philanthropic organizations did not respond with enough urgency in rescuing children from internment camps and children’s colonies. Papanek’s 1973 memoir, Out of the Fire, included scathing criticism of many American agencies along with a deep and personal ache for the children who could not be rescued in time. By analyzing records from JDC and other agencies (eg. American Friends Service Committee, Unitarian Service Committee, German Jewish Children’s Aid), she will present evidence both supporting and rejecting Papanek’s criticism. Miss Bengels will share letters, cables, telephone reports and other archival documents which demonstrate how diverse organizations came together to do the best they could during impossible times. Emily Bengels is a doctoral student in the Holocaust and Genocide Studies program at Gratz College in Philadelphia, and the recipient of the 2019 Sorrell and Lorraine Chesin/JDC Archives Fellowship. Her research at the JDC Archives investigates JDC rescue efforts of children in France in the World War II era, including the funding, transportation, and housing of children once in the United States.
