Participants will gain first-hand insight into the challenges facing Haiti almost eight years after the devastating earthquake in January 2010 and three years after Hurricane Matthew while performing meaningful service work directly connected to JDC’s humanitarian interventions on the ground.

Applying nearly a century of relief expertise as the world’s largest Jewish humanitarian assistance organization, JDC mobilized within hours of the tragic January 12th, 2010 earthquake and raised some $8.6 million dollars to help the survivors rebuild their lives. JDC has provided critical support in the areas of medical relief, emergency services, access to clean water, food, shelter, physical rehabilitation, education, post-trauma relief, job training and capacity building, and more.

Itinerary Highlights:

  • Understand JDC’s international development and disaster response strategy through meetings with JDC professionals and local experts, and visits to partner organizations working in the areas of medical relief, education, capacity building, and more
  • Engage in meaningful service work alongside Haitian high school students and help lead classroom activities for younger students with PRODEV, an innovative, Haitian-led foundation that supports the development of schools in underserved communities
  • Experience Haiti’s unique mix of Creole and French culture through food, music, and in depth briefings about the country’s history
  • Participate in a group-led, group-designed Shabbat in Jacmel, a tropical beach town and UNESCO designated Creative City that was impacted by the 2010 earthquake
